Automatic Folding Machines (Friction Feed)

Automatic Folding Machines (Friction Feed)

Unfamiliar with folding machines? See our short Guide to Folding Machines.

These are the types of folding machines used by most offices. They fold a stack of paper one at a time in a variety of folds. Some handle up to legal size paper (8 1/2" x 14"). Others can process larger paper (11" x 17" or more).  They range from light to heavy duty. Most cannot fold really thick, glossy or coated stock.  If you need to fold thick or glossy paper, see the Dynafold 322, the Martin Yale 1812 or 959 in this category; the Martin Yale 2051 in the Automated Setup category; and the Air-Feed machines below.  For very high volume also see the Air-Feed machines.

Multiple Sheet Folding Machines

Multiple Sheet Folding Machines

Only one folding machine, the DialThree, has the capability to collate and fold up to 3 sheets automatically. Folder Inserters can also collate and fold multiple sheets and place them in an envelope or not at your option. Some Bookletmakers can fold multiple sheets in half when fed manually or automatically when combined with a Collator. Some regular folding machines allow you to fold a set of 3-5 sheets manually by dropping the set into a slot.

Manual Feed Folding Machines

Manual Feed Folding Machines

Manual folding machines look like a toaster. You drop from 1 to 3 sheets in one slot and it comes out the other. All models perform a letter (also called a tri-fold or C) fold. The Martin Yale 6400 also does a half fold.

Automated Setup Folding Machines

Automated Setup Folding Machines

Automated setup folding machines let you select a fold from a control panel. These machines are great if you perform a number of different folds.  Most common fold settings are pre-programmed.  Setup is then a one button operation.

Air Feed Folding Machines (For Glossy Paper and High Volume)

Air Feed Folding Machines (For Glossy Paper and High Volume)

Air-Feed machines are used for high volume and folding glossy and coated stock.  These machines use vacuum suction to move paper rather than the pressure of 2 rollers as in friction-feed machines, so they are faster.  Slippery stock is easily processed in these machines.
